Synopsis

British Admiral Charles Colville Frankland travelled from Vienna to South Eastern Europe and the Levant during 1827-28, when he was still a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. His journey lasted fifteen months. Frankland published the first edition of the account of his journey in 1829, soon after his return to England. A second edition appeared in 1830. Frankland’s account is written in the form of a travel journal. He describes his itinerary from Vienna to Hungary, Wallachia and Bulgaria all the way to Istanbul, where he toured the monuments and sights in the surrounding area. On his return trip Frankland crossed the Dardanelles and the Troad and reached Smyrna. From Smyrna, he travelled to Nauplion and Athens where he met the Greek politicians Mavrokordatos and Trikoupis, and visited Aegina and Poros. He continued to Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon and Alexandria and returned to Vienna via Malta and Italy.
This edition of his account is illustrated with engravings based on the author’s drawings which include costumes and views of Constantinople, Nauplion, Smyrna, Damascus and Beirut. It also includes a glossary of the Arabic language and an index of places where he stopped on his journey from Vienna to Istanbul.
