Synopsis

Two major studies on Arab horse by two leading French scholars in the field. Count Jean-Emmanuel Hector The Couteulx de Canteleu (1827-1910), is a French cavalry officer, breeder of dogs and hunting specialist to run.
With Louis Lane, he creates the hunting dog breed of the Norman artesian basset. He is the author of a reference book on the different breeds of current dogs and the hunt, the Manual of French vénerie, which is always authoritative. He was captain of cavalry in the French army.
He is also known for this work together his work on secret societies, in which he points out links between Freemasonry and the French Revolution, and his anti-Masonic views.
Daumas was the Director of the Algerian Affairs an the French Ministry of War. Between 1837 and 1839 , when he was a Consul at Mascara, he met several times with the leader of the Algerian national movement Emir Abdul Qadir al-Jaza’iri.
The work consists of two parts, the first is entitled ” The Horses of the Sahara”, while part II is entitled ” The manners of the desert” with chapters on gazelle and ostrich hunting, greyhounds, hawking etc.
An English edition appeared in London in 1863 translated by James Hutton.
The author also held the position of director of Arab Affairs in Algeria during the French occupation. He wrote several works on Arab life in North Africa.
