George Post (1838-1909) an American Missionary, studied medicine in New York and came to Lebanon in 1863 where he studied Arabic. When the American Syrian Mission ( later the American University of Beirut) was established, he was appointed as teacher in botany and surgery. He lived in Beirut for forty one years, and travelled in Syria. He wrote several books and contributed to the establishment of the first Arabic medical journal Al-Tabib with Khalil Saadeh and Bishara Zalzal. The first edition of this major work on the flora of Syria was printed in Beirut in 1883.
