Synopsis

John Kitto (1804 – 1854) was trained for employment by the Church Missionary Society in 1824 as a printer at one of their foreign presses. In June 1827 he was sent by the society to Malta. In 1829 he became a member of a private mission-party to Persia and an interesting account of the journey appears in his ‘Journals’. In 1835 a ‘Biblical Commentary’, which resulted in ‘The Pictorial Bible’ was originally published anonymously in monthly parts. This work relates a complete history of Jerusalem from its origin through the time of Christ. The author describes Jerusalem in the time of David and then Solomon to the time of the Crusades and finally in the time of Christ.
