Synopsis

The authors in this study “set out to examine the effects of the impacts of western ideas on the social institutions of the Moslem lands in the Eastern Mediterranean area. In the course of their work they became aware that no adequate account existed of the state of Moslem society before the opening of the nineteenth century”. The material in the first part have been drawn as far as possible from the original Turkish and Arabic sources. The second part deals chiefly with the religious and cultural institutions. [Jacket].
