First edition. An abridged Swedish edition appeared in Stockholm in 1794. Volume I mainly focuses on the Turkish-Russian war of 1788-9. Volume II describes the author’s travels in Egypt, Palestine, Greece and Syria. Ferrieres is very critical of Choiseul-Gouffier’s embassy and also criticises Volney’s ‘Sur la Guerre Actuelle’. Choiiseul-Gouffier replied in Observations sur les Memoires de M. Comte de Ferrieres-Sauveboeuf’, Paris, 1790. According to Pingaud, Ferrieres was in Aleppo in 1783. He travelled to Arabia and Persia where he represented himself to the Shah as a precursor of the French envoy, and later he undertook a political mission for Vergennes, French ambassador at Constantinople prior to Choiseul-Gouffier. He also collected medals and antiquities for his patron Hennin.
