Synopsis

In 1809 Sherer went to the Peninsula with the 34th and fought at Albuera, Arroyo dos Molinos, and the Battle of Vitoria. In 1813 he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Maya and was held captive in France for two years. In 1818 the 34th were sent to Madras which inspired his “Sketches of India” (1821). Sherer returned to England in 1823 and his ” Recollections Of The Peninsula ” was published and ran into five editions. In 1824 his ” Scenes and Impressions in Egypt and Italy ” an account of his experiences of the overland route was published. In 1825 the work of fiction that we offer was published and ran into three editions within the year. ” Rambles In Germany ” followed in 1826 and Sherer continued to write on military and evangelical subjects.
