He studied at the University of Cairo and later at the University of Exeter. He is the author of several works, including: The Myth of Arab Piracy in the Gulf (1986), The British Occupation of Aden (1990), The Fragmentation of the Omani Empire (1989) and the recent autobiographical book, My Early Life (2009), with English translation in 2011.
