The Austria-Czech orientalist, theologian and geographer Alois Musil (1868-1944) from 1896 to 1902 took several research trips through Arabia and the Holy Land. His maps Petraea Arabia, published in 1907, were the first scientific inventory of the Nabatean antiquities, including the ruins of Petra.
The first volume deals in Moab, the fourth the ethnological results. The second volume covers the territory of the ancient kingdom of Edom, which was east of the southern part of the Jordan valley, the Wadi Araba between the northern Moab (Wadi Hesa limit) and the south of Seir (Seirgebirge) and which now belongs to Jordan.
