Volume I: xxvii, 440 pp., / Volume II: x, [1], 484 pp., contemporary full calf, slightly rubbed round edges, title gilt on decorated spine, gilt filaments and decoration on upper & lower covers, marbled endpapers and outer edges, spine labels chipped with some loss, occasional foxing, previous owner’s inscription on front fly leaf dated July 1840, otherwise set in good condition, Richard Bentley, London, first edition, 1838.

First British edition, normally found with ten colour plates, but seemingly here without them and were not listed in the contents. The original edition was published in Philadelphia in 1835, of which the NUC locates only one copy. Addison left Malta in 1835, travelling to the Levant from April to October, 1835, visiting Greece and Turkey as well as Syria. Addison was very anti-Turkish and also very critical of the Bavarian monarchy. He describes the political situation in Syria, with many observations of the antiquities and ruins.
