Pierre Henri Stanislas Escayrac of Lauture (1826 - 1868), Earl and Marquis Escayrac, Commander of the Legion of Honour, was a French explorer, geographer, diplomat and linguist. He undertook numerous trips to Africa and the East and has left interesting works.
In 1856, he was called by the viceroy of Egypt, to lead an expedition to search for the sources of the Nile. Napoleon III gave him the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honour as a reward for his worthy representation of French science abroad. He befriended Ferdinand de Lesseps, whom he met in Cairo and became a strong supporter of the Suez Canal project.
De Lauture published this work on his return to France after several years of travel in North Africa, Egypt, Sudan and the Holy Land.
