Volume I: xxiv 314 pp., +[8 pp. adverts], 1 plate slightly damaged / Volume II: xxii, 388 pp., +[8 pp. adverts], 2 engraved frontispieces, numerous plates, many full-page, original decorated cloth, slightly worn, title gilt on decorated spine, title printed in red & black, translated from the original German by Clara Bell, with an introduction and notes by S. Birch, from Bath Public Library with usual blindstamps and label verso front covers, shelf reference on spine, occasional foxing, spine of volume 2 partly detached, Cassell & Company Limited, London, 1887.

This profusely illustrated work by the distinguished German Egyptologist Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898) enjoyed great popularity in its day and was translated into French and English. Ebers was professor of Egyptology at Leipzig 1870 - 1889. He discovered in Thebes one of the finest examples of Papyri-Papyrus, which is described in the above work. Ebers was the main contributor to the first edition of Baedeker’s Egypt. [Blackmer 528].
