Sim, Katharine.

8vo. 447 pp., numerous b/w plates, maps and line drawings, publisher’s original wrappers, notes, glossary, index, Talis House stamp verso front & lower covers, otherwise copy clean & in very good condition, Quartet Books, London, 1981.

The author first read about J. L. Burckhardt when she visited “Petra” in 1960, 150 years after the latter discovered it. Henceforth her interest in him grew and she eventually decided to write about this unassuming explorer whose other great discovery was The Great Temple of Rameses II at Abu Simbel. This book is intended as an introduction to Burckhardt, the man and his travels, the adoptive son of England, who lived and worked dangerously, strenuously in her service, and who died in so doing.
