Camille Enlart, who wrote prolifically on the history of the art of Cyprus, died before this publication was completed. The plates include plans and architectural details of cathedrals and ruins.
This work is an analysis of the artistic heritage of the Crusades, starting in Cyprus and the Holy Land, addressing the expansion of the French art during the middle ages and its influence on the religious art in the East. He also discusses the oriental origins of the Roman art, a subject previously discussed by de Vogüé, Max van Berchem and Skzygowsk. Enlart endeavoured to analyse the elements of the architecture of the Crusaders and compare them with similar elements in the West, thus disentangling the eastern contributions from the oriental contributions in the West.
