Freytag, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich, 1788-1861.

4to. 694 pp., double column per page, cloth backed boards, title page browned, scattered light foxing, otherwise copy in good condition, Schwetschke, Halle, 1837.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Freytag was a German philologist. He started his career as a theology tutor and a chaplain, but later turned to researches in Arabic, Persian and Turkish, studying in Paris under De Sacy. In 1819 he was appointed a professor of oriental languages in the new university of Bonn, a post he continued to hold until his death in 1861.
This volume is an abridgement of Freytag’s major work Lexicon Arabico-Latinum, which is considered the most influential Arabic dictionary of the 19th Century and still regarded as an indispensable tool. It is a masterpiece of lexicography by a noted Arabist. The four volume dictionary (1830-37) as well as other works by Freytag contributed greatly to the furtherance of Arabic Studies in Europe.
