Erpenius, Thomas 1584-1624.

12mo. [12], 132 pp., woodcut device on title, contemporary full calf, blindstamp and library shelf label of the Earls of Macclesfield, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, light browning to edges, otherwise copy in good condition, Ex Typographia Auctoris, Leiden, first edition, 1621.

Judged "very exact" by his contemporaries, systematic, innovative in research on pronunciation of the Hebrew, this grammar helped to spread the study of Hebrew and to fix its syntax and pronunciation. Famous orientalist and philologist, Thomas Erpen or Erpenius (1584-1624), became professor at the university of Leiden, he mastered Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Turkish and Ethiopian. His reputation was established throughout all learned Europe. Although very solicited, he never wanted to leave his native country.
