Grose, John Henri 1750-1783.

Small 8vo. ix, [3], 369 pp., half-title, translated by M. Hernandez, contemporary mottled calf, slightly rubbed, title gilt on decorated spine, marbled endpapers and edges, previous owner’s inscription on half title page, otherwise copy in very good condition, La Veuve Panckouke / Desaint & Lambert, London, Lille & Paris, first French edition, 1758.

John Henry Grose , civil servant of the East India Company, left England in March 1750 for Bombay, “ in the station of a covenant servant and writer to the East India Company.” A first edition of this work appeared in 1757 in one volume, and in 1766 a second edition in 2 volumes. This work gives a good account of eastern manners and customs, then little known, and the work has been made the basis of many popular accounts. It is said to have been compiled from Grose’s notes by John Celand. The first edition appeared in 1757 in one volume, and in 1766 a second edition in two volumes. In this work Grose describes the route to India, and a large part of it deals with Islam in India and Persia.
