Poujoulat, Baptistin, 1809-1864.

8vo. xii, 456 pp., / 612 pp., half-titles, contemporary embossed full calf, lightly rubbed, title gilt on decorated spine, marbled endpapers and outer edges, a copy of the prize of the Lycée Imperial de Macon, scattered foxing, remainder of label verso front covers, otherwise in good condition, Ducollet, Libraire-Editeur, Paris, first edition, 1840-1841.

This is a continuation of the Correspondence d’Orient. First edition, a second edition appeared in Brussels in 1841. The work consists of 35 letters addressed to his brother Jean Poujoulat and to Joseph Michaud who together had produced the Correspondence d’Orient 1833-35. Baptistin envisaged his work as a sort of continuation. The letters to Michaud begin from Athens in 1836; those to his brother are dated from Aleppo beginning in October, 1837. The last letter, dated from lower Egypt, is followed by a summary of events in Syria from 1838 to 1841. The letters describe mainly Asia Minor and Syria, and include accounts of Turkish-Kurdish Wars and a long description of Palmyra. Poujoulat is a very interesting and penetrating observer, and his work is a worthy successor to the well-known Correspondence d’Orient.
