The author was a leading authority on Arabic music. He wrote several books in this field. In this work Farmer analysed the history of Arabic music and its relation to Islam, then the situation of the music under the Caliphs (632-661), and later under the Umayyads and Abbassids.
He traces the history of Arabic music to pre-Islamic times in Arabia and Syro-Mesopotamia area.
