Firuzabadi, Muhammad bin Ya'qub al- (1326-1414 CE)

4to. Arabic text, 410, 415, 416, 420 pp., contemporary quarter sheep, rubbed at spine and corners, titles gilt on raised spine, black pebble-grain cloth sides, printed with Arabic types (not lithographed), contemporary gift inscription to the title-page of volume 1 possibly from the editor, skinning to leather of spines, light browning to text blocks, otherwise set in very good condition, Matba'at al-Maymaniyah, Cairo, Ramadan, 1319 AH [1901/2 CE].

Firuzabadi (1329–1414), was a Persian Sunni Muslim polymath. He excelled in hadith, grammar, philology, history, literature, poetry and Islamic jurisprudence. He was a revered narrator and preserver of Prophetic traditions. Regarded as a major linguist and one of the prominent scholars of the 15th century. He was one of the leading lexicographers in the medieval Islamic world. He was the compiler of Al-Qamus al-Muhit, "The Encompassing Ōkeanós", a comprehensive Arabic dictionary which, for nearly five centuries, was one of the most widely used.
