8vo. xvi, 602 pp., double column to the page, modern buckram, new endpaper, previous owners’ name inscribed on title page, paper slightly browned, occasional foxing, otherwise copy clean & in very good condition, second revised and considerably enlarged edition, from the library of Ricardo Caminos, Al-Mokattam Printing Office, Cairo, 1905.

Socrates Spiro (1868-?) was an Egyptian of Syrian and Greek descent. He was educated at the American Mission College in Cairo. In 1907, Spiro went to Geneva to work as a lecturer of Arabic at the university there. He returned to Egypt in 1912, where he worked for the Egyptian Gazette and then was appointed Arabic editor of the Egyptian Mail.
Spiro was promoting the idea that the Arabs give up their alphabet and use the Latin.
