The author was the Chancellor of the Exchequer to the deposed Muhammad Nawab. Hassan notes how his master was unfairly treated, particularly at the hands of Colonel Eden and describes how, “He was from decaying health, physically and intellectually incapable of performing any duty which required the least mental application”. The author provides an eyewitness account of their pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. A party of one hundred and fifty set off in January 1870 via Jeddah and Aden and the author provides a noteworthy description of the stages of the Hajj. Hassan describes the return journey to England, comparing the education of English women with those of their Indian counterparts, commenting also on the various accounts of the unfair deposition of the Nawab that appeared in English journals.
