Al-Zamakhshari, Mahmud ibn ‘Umar / Joseph von Hammer.

Small 8vo. 54 pp., of German text, 27 leaves of Arabic text (54 pp), edited, translated & introduced by Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, half title, Uncut, gilt decorated Arabic titles within borders, modern boards, title label on spine, some foxing, small tear to lower margin of German title page without any loss to text, Strauß Witwe, Vienna, first German edition, 1835.

Abu al-Qasim Mahmud ibn Umar al-Zamakhshari (1075-1144), known as al-Zamakhshari, also called Jar Allah (Arabic for "God's neighbour"), was a medieval Muslim scholar of Persian origin, who subscribed to the Muʿtazilite theological doctrine. He was born in Khwarezmia, but lived most of his life in Bukhara, Samarkand, and Baghdad. He was a great authority on the Arabic language as well as a rationalist theologian. This little publication drew Hammer into a serious scholarly dispute with the German Arabist Fleischer, who set out in his 1836 counter-translation Hammer’s philological weaknesses.
