Synopsis

Captain Cheesman, an ornithologist and explorer, was a member of the personal staff of Sir Percy Cox, head of the British occupation force in Iraq. In 1922 Cheesman mapped the Arabian coast from Uqair to the head of the Gulf of Salwa. His main interest was in zoology, geography, and archaeology. In this account he gives an intimate glimpse of Ibn Saud after getting his permission in December 1923-24 to travel through Eastern Arabia. Cheesman started his expedition from Bahrain, then went to Oqair, Salwa, Hufuf and Jabrin. He spent three months at Hufuf, then mapped 150 miles of desert, identified the site of ancient Gerra, and corrected some serious mistakes about the Wadi system.
