Synopsis

Robinson was a professor of Biblical literature at Andover and, in 1831, founded the American Biblical Repository. Between March to July 1838 he travelled through the Holy Land with Eli Smith, an American missionary living in Beirut. Later in 1852 he made another journey to the Holy Land. The results of these two journeys were immense in producing the first detailed description of the physical and historical geography of the Holy Land. He used a philological and linguistic theory to decipher Arabic place names.
Robinson’s work was to influence the thought of nineteenth and many twentieth century Protestant scholars. Through his “Biblical Researches…” he established his reputation as one of the foremost geographers and Biblical scholars of his time.
