Synopsis

The collection of Arabic Coins, numbering some three thousand pieces, preserved in the Khedivial Library in Cairo, was formed by Edward Thomas Rogers who began his official career in the British Consular Services in Syria, and afterwards was appointed a consul in Cairo. As an accomplished Arabic linguist, he was one of the leading and most energetic members of the commission to preserve the monuments of Arabian Art.
The following work was undertaken by the author at the invitation of the Egyptian Government, during the summer of 1895, and the winter of 1896-7.
The special strength of the collection lies in the series of Coins of the Omayyad and the Abbasid Caliphs, and naturally in the issues of various Egyptian Dynasties, Tulumids, Fatimids, Ayyubids and Mamluks, and of the Cairo mint under the Osmanli Sultans.
