Synopsis

The second volume is an album drawn by F. Larché and J. P. Lange. This is the first detailed academic study of this palace and grave of Hyrcan. It was in 13 June 1818 that this site came to the attention to two British Travellers Charles Leonard Irby and James Mangles. They say in “Travels in Egypt and Nubia, Syria and The Holy Land” That after about four hours of travelling from Salt “ We arrived at a place called by the natives Arraq El-Amir. here are the ruins of an edifice constructed of very large stones, some of which are twenty feet long….Mr Bankes believed it to be the palace of Hircanu, who according to Josophus, being driven across the Jordan, by his brother Alexander king of Jerusalem”.
The archaeological research in this site began in 1976. Now the full discoveries are detailed and illustrated in this monumental work.
