Synopsis

Judged “very exact” by his contemporaries, systematic, innovative in research on pronunciation of the Hebrew, this grammar helped to spread the study of Hebrew and to fix its syntax and pronunciation. Famous orientalist and philologist, Thomas Erpen or Erpenius (1584-1624), became professor at the university of Leiden, he mastered Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Turkish and Ethiopian. His reputation was established throughout all learned Europe. Although very solicited, he never wanted to leave his native country.
