Synopsis

Ludwig Salvator, Archduke of Austria (1847-1915) was the grandson of Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany. He had to leave Tuscany with his family in 1859, and later in 1867, settled in Majorca where he devoted himself to his natural sciences and nautical interests. He was known as a champion for Majorca’s wildlife, in an era when the term “conservation” meant nothing. He travelled extensively in the Mediterranean on his own yacht, and published numerous scientific and partly self-illustrated works. He wrote a book on insects at the age of 22 and also a nine-volume book Die Balearen (The Balearic Islands). It was of great importance to Ludwig Salvator to stimulate public interest for landscapes, which he thought were unjustifiably little known and rarely travelled to. His attention focused less on classical cultural centres, and more on small, undiscovered regions.
