Synopsis

The focus of this book is a society as it functions. Emphasis is on the dynamics of the culture-the presence and impact of forces for change, the constants of attitude and behaviour, the abiding values.
The volumes in this series are based in part on handbooks prepared for the government. Specifically designed to meet an urgent government need, these handbooks were not the product of original research but rather a collation and synthesis of the best and most authoritative contemporary materials, published and unpublished, about the societies selected. As the work progressed, engaging several hundred scholars at some twenty universities, it became evident that the resultant handbooks were for many of the countries the only available studies from current materials of an over-all character.
