Synopsis
Herber studied at the University of Wittenberg in 1575, continued his studies in 1587 at the University of Leipzig and probably also visited the University of Heidelberg. He undertook a journey in 1582 from Germany through France and Italy to Egypt . In May 1585 he was taken prisoner by the by an Ottoman fleet and spent three years as a galley slave in Ottoman captivity. After he had regained freedom in 1587, he returned via Italy and Spain back to Germany and joined in 1592 in the service of the Elector Frederick IV of the Palatinate.
After travelling three more trips, his biography appeared in Heidelberg in 1610, describing his experiences in the Orient. This description, reissued in 1710, describes his experiences, foreign ways of life, religious customs, architectural and artistic works as well as nature.
