Synopsis

That Place chronicles with surgical accuracy the conditions of twenty three prisons scattered across the Lebanese governorates. It documents down to the last detail the jail experience starting from the wretched infrastructure to the lack of reformative programs to the judicial, administrative and security problems, giving a sample of inmates a voice to express themselves and share their stories and day-to-day prison life. The author Omar Nashabe, a former advisor on human rights and prisons, capitalized on his academic experience in criminal justice as well as the official reports he drafted on prison conditions during his post as advisor to the Minister of Interior and Municipalities between 2009 and 2011 in order to make this project possible. The book brings under scrutiny the dismal reality of the prison system in Lebanon and provides for the first time ever photographs from behind the bars, all while outlining recommendations to promote prison reform and minimize the detrimental impact of imprisonment on inmates and their families.
