Synopsis

Auguste Salzmann, (1824 – 1872), was a French photographer, who devoted himself mainly to archaeology and the Middle East. He was commissioned in 1854 by the Ministère de l’Instruction publique, to undertake a scientific mission to the Holy Land in order to confirm the historical hypothesis of de Saulcy about the history of certain sites in Jerusalem, which ignited fierce polemics in France.
Salzmann left France to the Holy Land in September 1853, visiting the Greek islands, Egypt, and Syria.
