Synopsis

During the second half of the 19th Century, Beirut was the main centre for photographic production in the Levant. Foreign photographers settled in Beirut, established their own studios and flooded the Western markets with their photographs. This book analyses the background of that phenomena and provides a comprehensive insight on photographic production during that period. The work also highlights the link between that production and the Orientalist view towards the Levant, which characterised most works of Western photographers, writers and artists.
