Synopsis

This plate is one of a series of photographs taken by Francis Bedford in the Mediterranean tour of Prince of Wales in 1862. Francis Bedford (1815 – 94) was the first photographer to accompany a royal tour. As a member of the Royal entourage, Bedford was permitted to photograph Christian and Muslim holy sites previously restricted as sacrosanct. Bedford’s photographs represent a unique visual diary of the tour and an important architectural and archaeological record of the Middle East at that point in time.
