Synopsis

This study brings together almost 100 Islamic calligraphic works of art, dating from the seventh to the nineteenth century and including manuscript pages, textiles, ceramic wares, and objects of luxury in metal, stone, wood and ivory. All inscriptions are translated and the author discusses each work in detail, providing much new material for future scholarship into the use and and development of calligraphy.
