Synopsis

Muhammad Farid Wajdi (1875-1954) was a prolific Egyptian author, whose writings aimed at integrating modern knowledge into the classical system of Islam. His Qur’anic commentary, al-Mushaf al-mufassar (The Koran Interpreted), aimed at providing a modern scientific exegesis of the Qur’an. From 1933-52 he was editor in chief of the official journal of Al-Azhar university. He engaged in many controversial debates pertaining to the emancipation of women and the authenticity of pre-Islamic poetry.
