Synopsis

Joseph Anton Messmer (1829-1879) was a professor of Archaeology at the Munich Museum. This is an account of a journey he made in 1859 to Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. The work is illustrated by steel engraved topographical views, some with their original chromolithograph colour.
Among the most beautiful colour steel engravings are the views of Abu Simbel, Bethlehem, Damascus Jaffa, Jerusalem and Tiberias, and among the wood engravings views of Beirut, Gaza, Hebron, Jericho and Sidon.
