Synopsis

Aloys Sprenger ( 1813-1893) studied in Vienna and Paris, then moved to London in 1838 and became a British citizen. After graduating in 1841 from Leiden University as a medical doctor on his thesis “ Arab medicine during the Caliphate period”, he was sent by the East India Company to serve in India. he was appointed as a president of the Islamic College in Delhi.
Sprenger translated several works from Arabic into German, including a biography of The Prophet and sections from the Qur’an. This work is a geographical survey of the routes between Islamic countries including Arabia, Iraq, Syria and the Syrian desert, Western Euphrates, Persia, Afghanistan, and other areas.
