Epistolae quatuor, quarum duae de moribus ac institutis Turcarum agunt, duae septem Asiae ecclesiarum et Constantinopoleos notitiam continent. TWO PARTS IN ONE VOLUME.
Smith, Thomas. 1638-1710.
Synopsis
The work is four epistles, two of which deal with the manners and institutions of the Turks, and two contain notices of the seven churches of Asia and of Constantinople.
The original version of this work was published in Latin in 1672 as Epistolae Duae, quarum altera de moeibus ac institutis Turcarum agit: altera septem Asiae Ecclesiarum notitiam continent. This edition was a reprint, and the first English edition appeared in 1678.
Thomas Smith was chaplain at the British Embassy at Constantinople from 1668 to 1671. Part of this work was the result of a tour he made with three other Englishmen in April 1671, in which they set out from Smyrna to visit the sites of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. He brought back a large number of Greek manuscripts, some of which were subsequently presented to the Bodleian Library. This work is a survey and remarks upon the manners, religion and government of the Turks. Together with a survey of the Seven Churches of Asia and a brief description of Constantinople.
