Synopsis

Since 1770 the geographers and engineers of the French Royal army started their survey of the Algerian coast which they considered as an important service for the French security. The survey achieved a fantastic collection of maps covering the whole North African maps. The importance of Algeria for French security and economy is relevant in the extensive cartographical surveys which resulted in approximately 1819 ancient maps of the country.
