Jean Sauvaget (1901 – 1950) was a leading French scholar, orientalist and historian. In 1924 he went to Syria, which became the field for his exploration and research. He became a member of the Institut Français du Proche-Orient in Damascus, and was appointed general secretary in 1929. As Secretary of the Institute he had the opportunity for thorough and detailed study of the whole area. An important part of his research and publications is devoted to the cities of Aleppo and Damascus, Syria.
This work covers the Near East and Arabia from the rise of Islam up to the Ottoman Empire. One of the chapters deals with Islam in the West.
