Synopsis

First edition. A second edition was published in two volumes in one with plates under the title “Turkey and the Turks…” The work is basically a history of Islam and includes the Arab caliphates, the Saracens, the Moslems in India, as well as the Ottoman Empire. Neale has previously written in 1851, Eight Years in Syria and in 1854 Evenings in Antioch. He was in the diplomatic service and had served in the Far East – Siam, Sumatra, Penang – as well as South Africa, Palestine and Turkey.
