Synopsis

This was a Doctoral Thesis submitted to the University of Paris, Faculty of Law and Economics. The thesis is divided into four parts: Part 1 discusses the foundation and development of the Imperial Ottoman Bank. Part 2 covers the monetary system and circulation. Part 3 discusses the Bank and its role as a credited establishment and Part 4 covers the Bank’s role in the economic development of Turkey.
The Imperial Ottoman Bank was founded in 1856 in the Galata business section of Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, as a joint venture between British interests, the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas of France, and the Ottoman government.
