Synopsis

Henri Lammens, was a French monk who lived most of his life in Lebanon. He lectured on Islamic history at the Jesuit University of Beirut, and edited the periodical al-Machreq after the death of another monk Louis Cheikho in 1927. Lammens published several books on the history of Islam, Syria, and Arabia. In this work Lammens discusses the condition of the Christian and Jews in Makkah before the advent of Islam, the military organisation in Makkah, the Arab character and religious ceremonies and the old frontier between Syria and Hijaz.
