Synopsis

First edition of this important narration of the siege of the Isle of Candia in Crete, which opposed the Venetian to the Ottoman Empire from 1648 to 1669. It is derived from the memoirs of Jean-Baptiste Rostagne, who was the adviser and state secretary of the Duke of Savoy. These memoirs were published under the title Viaggi del marchese Ghiron Francesco Villa in Dalmatia e Levante con la distinta Relatione de’successi di Candia, in Turin in 1668. They also inspired the work of Joseph Ducros in 1669. The second part is dated 1670 and bears the title Les Mémoires du voyage de Monsieur de Ville en Dalmatie & au Levant. It precedes a final section titled Suite de l’Histoire du siège de Candie and follows the pagination of the second.
