Synopsis

A presentation copy to Duc de Luynes signed by the author. Victor Guérin (1831 – 1891), was a French traveller who explored Palestine and Syria extensively, and produced several works on the Holy Land between 1852 and 1889. He joined the French school of archaeology at Athens in 1852, and was the first student to widen the field of activities of the school to include Asia Minor and Syria. He published books describing the geography, archaeology and history of the areas he explored, which included Greece, Asia Minor, North Africa, Syria and Palestine.
Guerin visited the Holy Land eight times (1852, 1854, 1863, 1870, 1875, 1882, 1884, 1888). He won a French Academy of Sciences prize for this work which offers the reader a careful account of his travels, with a wealth of topographical annotations.
