Synopsis

Adriaan Reland (1616-1718) was the celebrated Dutch Orientalist and professor of Oriental Languages and Ecclesiastical Antiquities at the University of Utrecht. By the age of 25, he was fluent in Hebrew and Arabic. His description of Palestine is a remarkable piece of work for its time, especially considering the fact that his description of the city of Jerusalem is not based on his travels but from accounts of other earlier authors, adding critical reviews of the maps.
