Synopsis
The first volume of a project entitled “Proverbes et dictons du peuple arabe, materiaux pour servir à la connaissance des dialectes vulgaire, recueillis, traduits et annotées par Carlo Landberg.” This is the only volume which was published on that project and contains 200 proverbs explained and translated into French by Landberg. For this research on the popular proverbs in the Sidon region of Lebanon, Landberg received a Doctorate from Leipzig University. He edited the “Diwan of Abi Muhjen al-Thakafi” in 1886, and the “Diwan of Zouheir Bin Abi Salma” in 1889. Landberg also published in 1883 a bibliography of Arabic manuscripts kept in a private library in Medina, which was subsequently acquired by Leiden University. His most important work was his study on the local dialects in Southern Arabia, which was published by Brill in Leiden in 1901-1913. In later years he wrote several studies on the Arabic language, and the dialects of ‘Anazah Beduins.
