Synopsis

Alban-Emmanuel Guillaume Rey (1837-1916), was a French archaeologist, topographer and Orientalist. He is known for his work on the French colonies in Syria in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. He published important works on the fortifications in the Middle Ages and the French colonies in the East. He is the founder of archaeology of the Crusades.
It was at the age of twenty that Emanuel-Guillaume Rey made ​​his first trip to Syria, when he explored the Hauran region. Other trips followed, particularly in August 1859 when he embarked with the photographer Louis de Clercq, who was entrusted by the Ministry of Education to assist in the mission. During this trip, Rey drew this large map of Palestine.
